Configurable ring connected to searchable supplier stone and setting data

A ring configurator has to make a complex product feel straightforward without hiding the details needed to price and fulfil it.

Metal, size, stone, setting and engraving may all affect the finished product. Some choices belong in Shopify as inventory or pricing records. Others are customer selections. Large stone or component lists may come from a supplier rather than the Shopify catalogue.

Treating every possible combination as a variant can create far more product records than the business needs. Treating everything as a free-text instruction creates a different problem: inconsistent data that is difficult to price, search and fulfil.

A better model separates the base product, genuine variants and configurable choices.

Start with the operational product structure

Before designing the customer journey, decide which choices Shopify must manage as distinct sellable items.

Use Shopify variants where a choice needs its own:

  • SKU or stock level;
  • base price;
  • product image;
  • weight or shipping treatment;
  • reporting or fulfilment route.

A retailer might use variants for metal and ring size if those choices affect stock or production. The stone, setting details, engraving and optional extras can then sit in the product configuration.

Map the customer journey before adding fields

The customer should only see questions that are relevant to the ring they are building.

A typical sequence might be:

  1. Choose the metal and size.
  2. Select a setting style.
  3. Choose a compatible stone shape or specification.
  4. Add an engraving if required.
  5. Review any additional charges.

Conditional logic can remove irrelevant branches. If a setting does not support a particular stone shape, that choice should not be offered. If the customer declines engraving, the engraving text and style fields do not need to appear.

This reduces the amount of information shown at once and prevents combinations the business cannot produce.

Use supplier data for extensive option lists

Stone catalogues and component feeds can contain too many values to maintain by hand.

Blueprint Data Sources can import:

  • JSON from a URL; or
  • a CSV file uploaded manually.

After the source is scanned, the merchant maps the JSON keys or CSV columns to Blueprint Data Source fields. The imported records are stored in Blueprint and can provide the option values customers search and select within a configuration.

JSON and CSV sources are refreshed manually. This distinction matters: the data is not automatically resynchronised on a schedule. When a source is refreshed, the latest imported records become available to the configurations using it.

If an import fails, Blueprint provides a notification and an error. Support can help investigate the source or mapping.

Decide what customers need to search

Do not expose every supplier field simply because it is available.

Start with the information that helps the customer make a decision and the fulfilment team identify the selected item. Depending on the feed, that could include:

  • stone reference;
  • shape;
  • dimensions or carat weight;
  • colour and clarity;
  • availability;
  • price or price band;
  • compatible setting.

Keep technical supplier data out of the customer journey unless it adds value. The configuration can remain concise while retaining a clear reference for fulfilment.

Blueprint Data Sources have been tested with up to 1,000,000 imported option values. Imported values are indexed for search and cached, with the cache refreshed when the Data Source is updated. That capacity should still be paired with a focused interface: a large dataset is only useful when customers can narrow it quickly.

Handle engraving and additional charges separately

Engraving is usually configuration data rather than a stock-controlled variant. Blueprint can collect the text and any related style choices through text fields, dropdowns or radio buttons.

Optional charges can be assigned to the relevant choices. Blueprint combines the add-ons into a Customisation Fee and pairs that fee with the base product in the cart.

This keeps the configured ring together for the customer while separating the base product from the total value of its customisation.

Test against real supplier records

Use a representative sample before importing the full feed.

Check:

  • required fields and data formats;
  • missing or duplicate identifiers;
  • how unavailable items are handled;
  • whether search terms match the language customers use;
  • how prices and add-on charges are calculated;
  • the information displayed on the final Shopify order;
  • the process for refreshing the source.

Run the same test online, on Shopify POS and through Draft Orders if the ring will be sold through those routes.

Build around the product, not the feed

Supplier data should support the buying journey rather than dictate it. Keep the product structure tied to inventory and fulfilment, use conditional questions for customer choices and expose only the supplier data needed to make a confident selection.
