Product packaging has to keep working long after it leaves the printer. Product ranges change, campaigns end and the page you want customers to visit today may not be the right destination in six months.
A dynamic QR code gives Shopify merchants more room to adapt. The printed code stays in place, while its destination can change behind the scenes. That makes packaging useful as a route to product information, repeat purchases, current offers or a wider campaign—without committing the whole print run to one fixed page.
What can a packaging QR code do?
The most useful destination depends on the product and what the customer is likely to need when they scan.
Send customers to the product page
This is the clearest option when packaging has limited space. The product page can carry specifications, ingredients, sizing, care instructions, videos or related products without putting every detail on the box or label.
Make repeat purchasing easier
For replenishable products, the packaging can provide a direct route back to the product or an add-to-cart action. The customer does not need to search the store and work out which version they bought previously.
Promote a current offer
A code can lead to a campaign page, cart action or discount. With a dynamic destination, the same printed packaging can support a different offer later, provided the new destination still makes sense for the customer and the wording beside the code remains accurate.
Sell a complementary set
Some products are more useful as part of a set. A candle might be paired with a holder and matches; a food product might sit within a tasting selection. QuiQR Core can create a bundle QR code that adds several products to the cart and applies a discount.
Why use a dynamic rather than static code?
A static QR code contains its final destination. Once it has been printed, changing that destination usually means generating and printing a new code.
A dynamic QR code keeps the printed code separate from the destination it opens. If a product is replaced, a campaign ends or a better landing page becomes available, the merchant can update the destination without regenerating the code or changing the artwork.
That flexibility is particularly useful for packaging, labels and printed inserts with a longer production life. Our static versus dynamic Shopify QR-code guide explains the trade-off in more detail.
A practical packaging setup
1. Give the scan a clear purpose
Start with the action you want the customer to take. “Scan for care instructions”, “Scan to reorder” or “Scan to shop the set” is clearer than placing an unexplained code on the box.
The message beside the code should remain true if you later change its destination. If the packaging promises a fixed discount, for example, do not repoint the code to a page where that offer no longer applies.
2. Choose the shortest useful route
Send the customer to the product, collection, cart or offer that matches the physical item in front of them. A homepage may be appropriate for general brand packaging, but a product-specific route normally removes more steps.
3. Make the code fit the packaging
QuiQR includes colour customisation on Free and custom logo upload on Core. Keep enough contrast around the code and avoid placing it across folds, seams, reflective materials or areas likely to be damaged.
Always test the printed proof with more than one phone before committing to a full packaging run.
4. Set up measurement before printing
QuiQR shows total scans and the five most-scanned codes, with figures updated in real time. Core also supports UTM parameters, so traffic can be separated by packaging type, product range or campaign in the merchant's chosen analytics platform.
QuiQR reports scans rather than orders, revenue or conversions. If purchase measurement matters, agree the UTM structure and analytics reporting before the artwork goes to print.
5. Review the destination over time
The benefit of a dynamic code is not just the ability to change it. It is the ability to keep the printed touchpoint useful. Review live destinations when products are discontinued, offers end or ranges change, rather than waiting for a customer to find a dead or irrelevant page.
When packaging QR codes are a good fit
They are particularly useful when:
- the product needs more information than the packaging can carry;
- customers are likely to reorder;
- the printed material will remain in circulation for months;
- the destination or offer may change;
- several products should be sold as a set; or
- scan activity needs to be separated by campaign or placement.
The code should still solve a real customer need. Adding one because there is empty space on the label is not a strategy.
