Physical retail has a hard limit - square footage. When a customer walks into a store, they can only buy what fits on the shelves. If their size is out of stock, or a specific colour is only held in the warehouse, that sale is usually lost to a competitor the moment they walk out the door.
To bridge this gap, the retail industry uses the concept of the ‘endless aisle’ - in-store digital kiosks that allow customers to browse a merchant's entire online catalogue from the shop floor, however they’re often clunky, expensive, and notoriously slow.
We wanted to see if we could build a frictionless endless aisle solution for Shopify merchants that overcomes those challenges. Here’s a look at our recent proof of concept (PoC), how it performed, and where we’re taking it next.
Stripping back the stack
We hypothesised that by leveraging Shopify’s headless architecture - specifically the Storefront API - we could bypass traditional server bottlenecks.
Our goal was to test whether a lightweight Single Page Application (SPA), written in vanilla JavaScript, could deliver a fast, reliable, and low-cost in-store browsing experience without requiring merchants to invest in thousands of pounds worth of proprietary hardware.
The showroom setup
We built a fully functional endless aisle PoC and deployed it in our POS showroom.
For the hardware, we mounted a portrait touch screen to a sleek stand, powered simply by a hidden Raspberry Pi running a locked-down Chromium browser. However, the software was designed to be completely hardware-agnostic - a merchant could just as easily run this on an iPad or Android tablet secured to a desk.
The app allows customers to browse merchandise across Visualsoft’s store - a test environment we have inside our HQ building, which allows us to real world test all of our projects. They can search, use dynamic price and category filters, and view high-resolution product imagery. Once they build their cart, the kiosk offers three omnichannel checkout routes:
- Pay on phone - Generates a secure QR code for a frictionless mobile checkout via Shop Pay, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
- Pay at the till - Securely pings a Laravel backend to push a draft order to the Shopify POS, giving the customer a short reference number (e.g. #D35) to hand to a cashier.
Contact me to discuss - Creates a draft order with specific internal metadata and tags, alerting shop floor staff to action the request.
Speed under pressure
The results completely exceeded our expectations. Because the application was built as a single-page app interacting directly with the Storefront API, it’s lightning-fast.
When a user taps a category or adjusts a price filter, the results populate instantly. There are no page reloads, no white screens, and no spinning loading wheels. The customer experience is closer to using a native iOS app than a website.
The PoC was put through its paces in our showroom, and we even had visitors from Shopify test it out in person. Their feedback was incredibly positive, and they were particularly impressed by the sheer speed and responsiveness of the interface.
Operational upsides for retailers
Is this just a cool showroom toy, or does it add real value for merchants? The answer is a resounding yes, for a multitude of reasons.
It captures lost revenue
The Endless Aisle ensures that a physical store is never truly out of stock. If a customer wants a t-shirt in a medium, but only the small is on the rack, they can walk up to the kiosk, find the medium in your warehouse inventory, and order it right there and then. It empowers customers to serve themselves while keeping the revenue within your ecosystem.
The barrier to entry is incredibly low
Because the heavy lifting is handled by our app and Shopify's cloud architecture, merchants don't need expensive server racks or bespoke £5,000 kiosk terminals. The software runs perfectly on a standard tablet or a low-cost Raspberry Pi setup, offering a premium retail experience on a budget.
It transforms the role of your store staff
Rather than spending ten minutes hunting in the stockroom for a size that might not even be there, your team can use the kiosk alongside the customer as an assisted-selling tool. It empowers your staff to confidently cross-sell, showcase alternative colours, and secure the sale on the spot. It moves focus away from manual inventory management and back to high-value customer service.
It maximises your physical retail footprint
Prime retail space is expensive, and you can’t display everything. The Endless Aisle allows merchants to rethink their store layouts entirely. You can carry less physical stock on the floor - operating more like a curated showroom - while still offering your complete, extended catalogue digitally. It means you can do more volume in a smaller, more cost-effective physical space.
Turning the PoC into a product
Because the PoC proved so viable, we’re now looking to develop it into a fully-fledged Shopify app. While the initial version will focus on getting a robust, frictionless catalogue and checkout handoff into merchants' hands, the architecture we’ve built paves the way for some incredible omnichannel features.
If built into a full app, the endless aisle could eventually offer:
- Omnichannel cart recovery - Not ready to buy in-store? Customers could instantly push their kiosk cart to their phone via email or SMS to complete at home.
- Advanced digital signage - When idle, the kiosk could double as a dynamic marketing billboard, playing promotional videos or highlighting new collections to drive footfall powered by our Broadcast app.
- Smart product recommendations - By integrating it with our Impulse app, it could display native recommendations, showing ‘Frequently Bought Together’ or ‘Complete the Look’ products to encourage higher average order values.
- Loyalty and customer accounts - Allowing shoppers to quickly log in to access saved wishlists, view past orders, and apply loyalty points directly from the shop floor.
- In-Store item locators - If a product is in stock physically, the kiosk could display a dynamic aisle or shelf map to guide the customer right to it, or blink the LED on the products electronic price label.
Ultimately, our goal is to enable merchants to install the Endless Aisle app directly from the Shopify App Store. From there, they’ll be able to generate unique kiosk URLs, configure custom themes and branding, map kiosks to specific POS locations, and deploy a lightning-fast endless aisle in their own physical stores in a matter of minutes.
